A Pot of Light: The Oneness of Chan and Tea
Some objects serve a practical purpose; others quietly change the atmosphere around us. A Pot of Light belongs to the latter.
Inspired by the earliest form of the Jinsha Ancestor Teapot, and by the Diamond Sutra’s teaching, “Let the mind arise without abiding anywhere,” A Pot of Light suggests that when the mind is free from attachment, light naturally appears. It is more than a home fragrance; it is an expression of Eastern philosophy: a preference for stillness over noise, simplicity over display, and inner clarity over outward show.
In Chinese culture, the teapot has never been merely a vessel for tea. It symbolises hospitality, self-cultivation and the rhythm of daily life. A teapot accompanies reading, conversation, meditation and quiet reflection, inviting us to slow down and live fully in the present.
A Pot of Light reimagines this enduring object as a scented candle. The clear borosilicate-glass pot is lucid and bright; when the candle is lit, light and shadow move slowly through the room, bringing a sense of quiet and ease. As the fragrance gently spreads, it recalls the calm of a scholar’s study or a Chan temple, where time flows slowly and every object holds meaning.
The fragrance is inspired by the idea that Chan and tea share one taste. Warm and restrained rather than forceful, it slowly settles the emotions, unfolding like a journey. Bright notes of bergamot, sea breeze and ancient tea gardens awaken the senses with freshness and clarity; bamboo, pinewood and soft cinnamon then bring warmth and quiet balance; finally, ambergris, sandalwood and musk leave a lasting impression: deep, peaceful and contemplative, like the silence that lingers after tea. The candle burns for approximately 55 hours. Gently replacing the lid allows the flame to go out naturally, with calm and safety.
At Golden Villa, we believe true luxury lies not only in rarity, but in the quality of everyday life. The objects we choose should do more than decorate a space; they should shape the way we live within it. After the fragrance is finished, the glass pot can continue to be used as teaware, a vase, or a decorative object, extending its companionship beyond the life of the candle.
A Pot of Light was created with this belief. It is a small ritual that reminds us to pause, breathe and reconnect with ourselves. Craftsmanship, fragrance and the wisdom of Eastern aesthetics meet in a single object: not only a home fragrance, but a gentle light reserved for daily life.
More than a thousand years have passed since the spirit of Jinsha first inspired scholars, monks and craftspeople. Today, that same spirit endures not only in clay and tea, but also in fragrance, light and the quiet moments we create for ourselves.
A Pot of Light is an invitation to rediscover those moments, and to let a timeless Eastern way of living become part of contemporary life again.
